Banksia menziesii / updated foliage / 2021
Rebuild of the foliage of a new Banksi menziesii model.
Oblong in shape, somewhat truncate at the tips, and with serrated margins.
It’s the wind dried twists, wasp galls and the shapes made by chewing insects, that give them so much individuality.
10 x individual leaf studies
simplified polygon mesh

Truth be known, aesthetic decisions for me are always a battle between monochrome and colour / brutal form vs intertwining physical and emotional references…
Hoya sp. Waxy leaves and starry porcelain flowers. Radiating globes of actinomorphic geometry.
A short progress sequence of the current work.
basic 5 star module / repeat / twist and refine.
randomising on a spherical axis / buttery icing sugar surface and colours.
repeats deleted / wireframe render for reference / minimal light interaction with surface.
colour added to define shapes / glossiness increased.
basic white render / centre of flowers peaks increased.
specularity and roughness adjusted for a more waxy appearance.
interface screenshot / rudimentary lighting setup.
colours removed / ‘noisy’ shadows.
foliage / super glossy
left: dominant lighting + glossy flowers / right: increased global illumination + less gloss

Victorian State Library / Remix / 2017
In 2017, the State Library of Victoria offered a challenge to creatives to reuse, remix or manipulate a selection of images from their permanent collection.
As an admirer of the exquisite works of Pierre-Joseph Redouté in general, I decided to rebuild his 'Methonica Superba' in a 3D environment, effectively transposing and replacing with a modern architectural interpretation of one of his plant studies.
Although unsuccessful in achieving the opportunity to have this version displayed permanently in the State Library of Victoria, I was thoroughly motivated to push the boundaries of my understanding of the 3D modelling process, particularly in relation to producing an altered facsimile of such an iconic historical study.
Here's the original and the remix, and some details.
